AND Festival 2021: By the Sound Of Things, Kate Davies
AND Festival
Abandon Normal Devices (AND) is a nomadic commissioner and born-digital producer of ground-breaking art projects. AND’s portfolio includes a roaming biennial festival, which takes place in a new location every two years.
AND Festival 2021 will take audiences on an extraordinary journey responding to the Manchester Ship Canal and River Mersey, with projects presented on docklands, on the water and online. The programme invites audiences to renavigate the industrial landscape, bringing into focus the scale of our daily contemporary consumption.
By the Sound of Things by Kate Davies uses sound to take passengers under the sea to experience a subaqueous acoustic landscape. Featuring deep sea hydrophone recordings depicting the marine ecosystem disrupted by man-made ship noise, this hypnotic binaural sound work tells the story of the journey of a container as it travels from the surface to the bottom of the ocean. An accompanying film focuses on the world above water, where the machinations of the global shipping industry forge sonic trails across oceans to bring us our ‘things’; the necessary and frivolous, the coveted and the disposable.
This immersive audio-visual experience will be presented onboard the Mersey-built steam-powered Daniel Adamson (The Danny). From the deck of one of the last surviving Ship Canal tugs, visitors are invited to ponder the epic scale of the modern shipping industry and consider the impact of both our insatiable consumerism and resulting global shipping industry on the ocean environment.
Visitors can interact with Kate Davies’ By the Sound of Things live on The Daniel Adamson between Friday 9 – Sunday 11 July 2021. AND Festival 2021 takes place 27 May – 11 July, with online experiences at www.andfestival.org.uk
In the meantime, AND and the Daniel Adamson Preservation Society invite you to hop aboard The Danny for a digital exhibition featuring previous AND commissions in a range of exciting and unexpected locations.
By the Sound of Things by Kate Davies is commissioned and produced by Abandon Normal Devices. Presented by Abandon Normal Devices with the Good Business Festival. Supported using public funding by Arts Council England and Culture Warrington, with further support from The Daniel Adamson Preservation Society.
